Mezzanine Staircase

back to projects

Overview

A steel stair to a showroom mezzanine, fabricated and finished entirely off site and then hung in place over a single weekend. Every connection was made to bolt rather than to weld on site, because the shop was trading throughout and the only work that could happen inside it was work that made no sparks.

The Challenges

A shop that stayed open throughout, a stair that had to land on an existing floor whose level was already fixed, and a design that could not be adjusted once it had been fabricated.

The Engineering Solution

The whole stair shop-drawn and pre-checked against the opening, bolted rather than welded at every connection, and craned in over one weekend with a two-night contingency built into the lift.
