Balcony Balustrades

back to projects

Overview

Glass and steel guarding to eight balconies, set out from the tile grid rather than from each balcony's own edge. The tiles had already been laid to a line that wandered by a few millimetres across the elevation, and a balustrade that follows the structure rather than the tile line leaves a gap at one end or the other.

The Challenges

Eight balconies whose tiled edges did not line up with one another, a setting-out that could not start until the tiling was finished, and glass that has to sit in a frame tight enough to be safe and loose enough to be replaced.

The Engineering Solution

Every frame set out off the tile grid with a scribed base plate at the end posts, the frame fixed to the slab rather than to the tile edge, and each glass panel measured on site once its frame was plumb.
