Riverside Villas
back to projectsOverview
Four detached houses on a riverbank plot that falls eleven metres from the front boundary to the water. Each is stepped onto its own terrace so that no roofline interrupts the view of the house behind it, and the stepped levels let all four plots take the same ground-floor area without the rear garden being cut into the slope.
The Challenges
A riverbank that moves, a fall steep enough that ordinary pad foundations would have to key into ground varying across a single footprint, and a planning condition that fixed every roofline below the tree canopy.
The Engineering Solution
Raft foundations cast to a common datum above the design flood level, retaining walls stepped with the natural fall rather than against it, and a roof form set by the canopy line the condition imposed.
